Abstract:

The earlier impression, that the yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella has a few song dialects each with a large dispersal in Central Europe, has proved not to be correct. In the last few years various intensive investigations carried out in different regions have revealed very interesting microgeographic variations of song dialects or subdialects. To test the function of song dialects in preliminary experiments we played back song strophes to caged male or female birds in a sound-proof chamber. By heart rate responses measured by means of radiotelemetry the different meanings for male and female yellowhammers of the same song type were assessed.
