Abstract:

The mutual display call of the emperor penguin, a colonial seabird breeding in Antarctica, serves to convey the individual identity of the signaller. Cues used for individual recognition are present in be temporal patterning of syllables and the fine syllable structure. The present paper deals with digital analyses of the call in order to determine which cues are potentially involved in the individual identification of the signaller. The number and the variability of the cues are discussed in relation to their relevance as constituents of distinctiveness in the extreme circumstances where acoustic communication in the emperor penguin occurs.
